Asphalt Price Calculator

Turn an asphalt price per ton into numbers you can compare a quote against. Enter the dimensions, thickness and price per ton — the calculator returns the total price and breaks it down to a price per square foot and per square yard.

Total asphalt price

    How it works

Tons = length × width × (thickness ÷ 12) × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000, plus waste. Total price = tons × price per ton. The calculator divides that total by the area to show a price per square foot and per square yard, so you can line it up against a paving quote.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the price of asphalt?

Hot mix asphalt is commonly about $100–$150 per ton at the plant. Converted to area that is roughly $1–$2.50 per square foot of material at 2–3 in thick, before installation.

Is asphalt priced by the ton or the square foot?

Plants sell asphalt by the ton; paving contractors usually quote by the square foot or square yard installed. This calculator converts between them so you can compare the two.

Why does thickness change the price so much?

Tonnage scales directly with thickness, so going from 2 in to 3 in raises the asphalt tonnage — and the price — by about 50%. Getting the compacted thickness right matters for the estimate.
