How it works
Volume (cu ft) = length × width × (thickness ÷ 12). Tons = cu ft × density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000, plus waste. Hot mix asphalt is about 145 lb/ft³ — equivalently around 110 lb per square yard per inch of thickness, or one ton per ~80 sq ft at 2 in.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate asphalt tonnage?
Tons = length × width × thickness (all in feet) × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000. For thickness in inches, divide by 12 first. A 50 × 20 ft area at 2 in works out to about 12.1 tons.
How many tons of asphalt per square yard?
About 0.055 tons (110 lb) per square yard per inch of thickness. At 2 inches that is roughly 0.11 tons per square yard.
Should I order extra asphalt?
Add about 5% for compaction variation, uneven subgrade and material that cools on tools and in the truck. Running short mid-job means a cold joint, so a small cushion is worth it.
