Gravel Calculator

Work out how much gravel, sand or topsoil to order. Enter the area and depth and the calculator returns the volume in cubic yards and the approximate weight in US tons.

Material needed

    How it works

    Cubic yards = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27. Tons = cubic yards × material density (gravel ≈ 1.4, sand ≈ 1.35, topsoil ≈ 1.1, crushed stone ≈ 1.5 tons per cubic yard).

    Frequently asked questions

How many cubic yards of gravel do I need?

Multiply length × width × depth (all in feet), then divide by 27. For depth in inches, divide the inches by 12 first. This calculator does it for you.

How many tons is a cubic yard of gravel?

About 1.4 US tons per cubic yard for typical gravel, though it varies with moisture and stone type (1.3–1.5 t/yd³).

How deep should a gravel driveway be?

Plan on 4–6 inches of gravel for a driveway (often in two layers), and 2–3 inches for a walkway or decorative bed.
