Recessed Lighting Calculator
Plan a recessed (can) lighting layout. Enter the room dimensions and ceiling height — the calculator suggests how many lights to use and how far apart to space them for even, general lighting.
How it works
A common rule of thumb spaces recessed lights a distance equal to the ceiling height ÷ 2. The calculator fits rows and columns at that spacing across the room, and recommends placing the outer lights about half that distance from the walls.
Frequently asked questions
How far apart should recessed lights be?
A good starting point is to divide the ceiling height by two. An 8 ft ceiling → about 4 ft between lights. Tighten the spacing for task areas, widen it for accent lighting.
How many recessed lights do I need?
Lay out rows and columns at the recommended spacing across the room. This calculator estimates the grid for general lighting; add more for kitchens, islands and work zones.
How far from the wall should recessed lights be?
Place the outer ring of lights roughly half the standard spacing from the walls — about 1.5–3 ft — to light the walls without scalloping.
