How it works
A solid set of steps stacks a taller block under each higher tread. Side-profile area = run × rise × n(n+1)/2 (in²) ÷ 144, where n is the number of steps. Volume = width × that area, plus your waste allowance. 80 lb bags = cu ft ÷ 0.60.
Frequently asked questions
How much concrete do concrete steps need?
It depends on the number of steps and their size — a solid staircase grows with the square of the step count. A 3-step, 4 ft wide stoop at 7 in rise / 11 in run is roughly 0.35 cu yd. Enter your dimensions for an exact figure.
What is a standard step rise and run?
A comfortable exterior step is about a 6–7.5 in rise with a 11–12 in run. Keep every step in a flight the same size for safety and code.
Do I pour the steps solid?
This calculator assumes a solid pour. If you fill the core with compacted gravel or rubble and only pour a shell, you will use less concrete than the solid estimate.
